An open fire is a common sight across caravan and camping communities. However, there are some real risks associated with it. Everyone should take the necessary precautions and be aware of the rules and regulations of the park or camping ground. Ensure your fire is clear of flammable vegetation such as long grass and spinifex. Always observe the fire danger ratings and fire bans in your area.

CIL Caravan Safety Tip - Protecting Your Van from Storm Damage

To protect your van in the event of a storm or floods, make sure to pack down any annexes and antennas, whilst tying down and securing any loose items. Inside your van, unplug all electrical devices and place them in higher storage to avoid them getting wet, and switch off gas supplies. Lastly, make sure to keep an eye on all weather conditions in your area in case you have to move due to flooding.

CIL Caravan Safety Tip - Caravan Sway

Caravan sway is one of the most common causes of caravan accidents on the road and can be caused by poor weight distribution, uneven tyre pressure, poor suspension, side winds and entering slipstreams of heavy vehicles such as semi-trailers. Caravan sway can be prevented by packing your weight away from the axle, ensuring your tow ball weight is not too light, applying the appropriate air pressure to your tyres and reducing your speed in treacherous conditions.
