If you have never ventured into the Australian Outback, a trip to Broken Hill will amaze you. Located over 1,100km west of Sydney and surrounded by desert. It sits on the very edge of the Australian Outback; drive just 10 minutes in any direction from the centre of town, and you'll find yourself in complete isolation surrounded by rugged, moonscape terrain. This is the real Australian bush!
Broken Hill is Australia's oldest mining town and Australia's first heritage-listed city, historically considered one of Australia's boomtowns and often referred to as ‘The Silver City’. Its mining history is shown through geology exhibits at the Albert Kersten Mining and Minerals Museum in nearby Silverton. The disused 19th-century Day Dream Mine is open to the public. The Silver City is essentially a living museum offering a range of diverse landscapes and world-renowned cultural heritage experiences.
Points of interest worth checking out include the Line of Lode Lookout & the Miner's Memorial, dedicated to miners who've lost their lives since mining first began in the town.
Get a sense of the true character of Broken Hill and outback life at the Pro Hart Gallery. Pro Hart was an internationally renowned artist who worked across many forms, and here you can see a wide range of his wonderful drawings, etchings and sculptures.
A short drive north of the city, you'll come across The Living Desert, with 12 giant sandstone sculptures in the middle of the desert and a beautiful flora and fauna sanctuary. Experience The Palace Hotel, where the iconic Australian film Priscilla Queen of the Desert was filmed.
Don't forget to spend time in the historic town of Silverton. Home to many iconic Aussie films, the Mad Max 2 Museum is well worth a visit.
This a bucket-list destination for any keen traveller, and beyond the strong mining legacy, it's hard to escape the town's thriving art scene, from stunning murals and unique galleries to incredible open-air sculptures shaped from the rocky landscape.
Treat yourself to world-class sunsets and epic views of the Milky Way like never before. Broken Hill and beyond offer travellers spectacular national parks, lush rivers and lakes, abundant wildlife and classic towns of outback New South Wales.
A visit to Broken Hill and the surrounding region delivers an authentic and unique Aussie outback experience with the bonus that there is plenty of room to park your caravan or RV.
